In her practice, Kwade investigates and questions universally accepted notions of space, time, science, and philosophy by disrupting familiar systems and deconstructing everyday objects and natural materials. Gegebenenfalls die Wirklichkeit (Alicja) (Potentially Reality) (2019) is a meticulous exploration of selfhood, ownership, and dispersion in the digital age. The installation comprises 785 A4 sheets of paper printed with the artist’s entire genome. While 99.9% of human DNA is identical, in this work, Kwade highlights her unique genetic variations in bold, drawing attention to the fine margins that define individuality. Some sheets are mounted floor-to-ceiling, with the remainder stacked in copper containers. This artwork was included in her major 2021 exhibition In Abwesenheit (In Absence) at Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, where visitors were invited to take a page home, and her exhibition Die Notnauwkeit der Dinge (The Necessity of Things) at Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, in 2024.
