Mohamed Bourouissa initiated the project “Horse Day” during a residency in Philadelphia (United States) in 2013. Based in the Fletcher Street district, famous for his African-American horse community, he organized an equestrian costume competition. He documented through video and photo this “tunning”, by capturing the history of the place, imagery of the cowboy and visualization of spaces to shoot a contemporary western in the city.
Back in France, the artist pursued his research on the Philadelphia urban cowboys, and produced a series of sculptural works based on a sophisticated assemblage, with photographic transfers onto cut out car hoods and body parts, which play with the abstraction of reality. Bourouissa uses a fundamental analogy between the car or motorcycle and the horse—two symbols of American culture and of the urban environment of Philadelphia. He brings out associations between horse and car. In this series, the Western imagery meets pictorialist photography.
The project has been shown at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2014, at the Lyon Biennial in and at kamel mennour gallery in Paris in 2015, at basis in Frankfurt and at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2016, and in 2017 at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Barnes Foundation. A major exhibition at Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris was dedicated to this project.

Bourouissa a initié le projet “Horse Day” lors d’une résidence à Philadelphie (États-Unis) en 2013. Installé dans le quartier de Fletcher Street, célèbre pour sa communauté hippique africaine-américaine, il organise avec les populations locales un concours de costumes équestres.
Il documente en photo et vidéo ce tournoi, et s’empare de l’histoire du lieu, de l’imagerie du cowboy et de la conquête des espaces pour tourner un western contemporain dans la ville.
De retour en France, l’artiste poursuit sa recherche et produit une série d’œuvres sculpturales plus ou moins abstraites, réalisées grâce à un méticuleux procédé de tirage argentique et numérique sur capots et carrosserie de voiture. Il explore l’analogie entre le cheval et la voiture, deux symboles de la culture américaine et de l’environnement urbain de Philadelphie. Le Western rencontre ici la photographie pictorialiste.
Le projet « Horse Day » a été montré à la Haus der Kunst à Munich en 2014, à la Biennale de Lyon et à la galerie kamel mennour à Paris en 2015, à basis, Francfort et au Stedelijk Museum à Amsterdam en 2016, ainsi qu’au Studio Museum de Harlem et à la Barnes Foundation de Philadelphie en 2017. Ce projet a fait l’objet d’une exposition majeure au Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris.
