This new work echoes Sleep (Fly), a bronze hand containing flies from 1966, the artist’s date of birth. This new piece features feathers in the palm of the hand, a reference to the exhibition “The Morning After” at the Institut Giacometti, of which it is the conclusion. Gordon plays on the contrasts between solid bronze and volatile feathers. Seemingly harmless, feathers can become dangerous if - like Gordon - you’re allergic to them. The horizontal position of this work metonymically echoes the statuary of recumbent statues. For the artist, it is reminiscent of an ex voto or a vanitas.
