Avec le chantier des « objets peints » ouvert depuis 1980, Bertrand Lavier imagine un espace hybride dans lequel l’objet et sa représentation s’embrassent d’un même regard. Armoires, appareils photo, miroirs, pianos ou encore tableaux représentant par exemple une carte des Etats-Unis par régions sont ainsi recouverts, jusque dans leurs moindres détails, d’une couche épaisse de peinture identique à la couleur de leur surface. L’artiste peint ici véritablement « sur le motif » prenant au sens le plus littéral l’expression employée par les peintres de la fin du XIXᵉ siècle qui délaissaient leur atelier pour aller peindre en plein air.

Bertrand Lavier has been working on his “painted objects” project since 1980, creating a hybrid space in which the object and its representation are embraced by the same gaze. Cabinets, cameras, mirrors, pianos and paintings depicting, for example, a regional map of the United States are covered, down to the smallest detail, with a thick layer of paint identical to the color of their surface. Here, the artist truly paints “sur le motif”, taking in its most literal sense the expression used by painters at the end of the XIXᵉ century, who abandoned their studios to paint in the open air.
