For his 2023 exhibition “The sun is their drum”, at kamel mennour, Liam Everett has conceived a series of 11 new painted compositions, directed by the visible light spectrum and inherent limitations of the human eye. Activating a lyrical approach to composition, the paintings and their uncanny delivery allow the exhibition space to open towards the phenomenological and into Everett’s cosmos. The paintings result from a highly specific layering process, based on a ultra-violet palette that sets the stage for the rendering of levitating forms suspended within various horizons. For Everett, the works generate a «lyrical percussion» complemented by the layering of varnish, ink, oil and sand - acting as both transparencies and reflectors of light which are redirected in multiple patterns, thereby inducing an element of syncopation. This new exhibition at kamel mennour is an occasion to concentrate on Everett’s most recent research and particularly his exploration of “seeing and being seen” by one’s surroundings, whether animate or inanimate.
