Huang Yong Ping

Born in 1954 in Xiamen, Fujian province (China), HUANG YONG PING died in Paris (France) in 2019. He was one of the most famous, controversial and provocative Chinese Avant-garde artists. Kamel Mennour and Huang Yong Ping have been working together since 2009.

Founder of the group Xiamen Dada in China in the 1980s, Huang Yong Ping was invited by Jean Hubert Martin to participate in the seminal exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Pompidou and at the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris in 1989. He participated in the 2017 group exhibition Theater of The world, Art and China after 1989 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Internationally acclaimed artist, his work has been presented in numerous personal exhibitions at the Astrup Fearnley Museet of Oslo (2008), at the Barbican Art Center of London (2008), at the Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2009), at the Musée océanographique de Monaco (2010), at the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon (2014), at the Red Brick Museum in Beijing (2015) and at Power Station of Art in Shanghai (2016), among others. A great travelling retrospective was held between 2005 and 2008 at the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis, MASS MoCA in North Adam (Massachusetts), and at the UCCA in Beijing.

In 1999 he represented France at the 48th Venice Biennale with Jean-Pierre Bertrand. Winner of the Wolfgang Hahn Prize (Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany) in 2016, Huang Yong Ping was the artist invited for the 7th edition of Monumenta, in the Nave of the Grand Palais in Paris.
